Why Forecast Calls Go Wrong

Forecast calls get very interesting when the spreadsheet and Salesforce disagree.
Not “interesting” in the good way.
One says the quarter is fine, and the other says several deals are:
❌ missing close dates
❌ sitting in the same stage since the dinosaurs
❌ forecasted by optimism alone
❌ somehow worth exactly enough to hit the number
Then someone asks which version is right, and suddenly, the forecast call becomes a live-action trust exercise.
A forecast is not supposed to be a motivational poster, but if used correctly, it can be an amazing decision-making tool.
That means the goal is not forcing every rep to fill in more fields just because RevOps said so.
The goal is defining the smallest amount of information needed to make the forecast trustworthy:
✅ a real next step
✅ a realistic close date
✅ an agreed stage definition
✅ a clear owner
✅ a reason to believe the deal is still moving
And if some of these come from automated systems, it's even better. More fields don't create accuracy, but refining the key fields and building a better process around them definitely goes a long way.
