Who You Gonna Call?

Who You Gonna Call?

I’ve recently compared the RevOps role to being a therapist or a trades contractor… but lately, it feels a lot spookier.

These days, I feel more like a ghostbuster.

The Salesforce instances I see are haunted by workflows, admins, and one-off requests that should have long since transitioned to the other side. Instead, they’ve somehow been left to linger among the lines of code, causing mischief and instilling fear every time they pop up.

There are the ghosts of one-off requests past – a senior leader that liked to be notified each time an opportunity hit a specific stage. Except that stage no longer exists and that leader has long since left the company.

There are the ghosts of admins past – code built by admins with varying levels of knowledge that keeps getting new code bolted on top instead of thoroughly examined.

There are the ghosts of workflows past – typically created after a severe point of failure to “ensure it never happens again” but quickly forgotten about and rendered unnecessary by a new process or new team member.

These ghosts may not be visible, but their presence is undeniable – weird workflows that lead to nowhere, automated behavior that can’t be explained, and code that is inexplicable to even a well-versed Salesforce admin.

It’s why I always stress the importance of engaging stakeholders before even getting into the technical infrastructure.

Once you have that qualitative understanding of not only what’s happened before, but what is truly necessary for the team today, you can be better prepared to understand where and what to look for BEFORE throwing new code in or ripping old workflows out.

And if there’s something strange in your Salesforce ‘hood…

You know who to call.

Ghost(Ops)Busters 👻 ... DMs open for haunted orgs. do for your org. I’m more than happy to keep learning my lesson 😅
