The Tax Season Blues

I just paid an expert to mess up my taxes.

April means tax season – everyone’s favourite time of year, right?

I just got my draft returns back from my check notes new, highly researched accountant and, honestly, I might as well have handed everything to my new puppy.

Baffling errors, amounts missing, and amounts to be paid that made absolutely no sense.

A nightmare.

And I’m the first person to use that old idiom, “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮** 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲” – especially in my line of work.

Assuming how something or someone works is a sure-fire way to miss the critical details that actually solve the problem.

But I still assumed that a tax specialist would understand the intricacies of the system - including how to properly handle an inter-provincial move.

In the end, it did make an a** of me, because here I am, going through all my files with a fine-tooth comb myself… while STILL having to pay the invoice for the “services rendered”.

To be fair, after the initial shock, we grabbed a (very strong) coffee, sat down together, discussed my findings, and actually fixed it - and turned a near-breakup into a much better partnership.

All that to say, even if you hire a renowned specialist - for your Salesforce, your marketing, your finances, your life - trust, but verify.

As for me, I’m debating launching ForecaaS ForTax with all the research I’ve now been forced to do on taxes in general.

Who wants to sign up? 😂
