The Hidden Cause of Metrics Problems
Most metric problems are definition problems pretending to be reporting problems.
When a team says, “Our ARR number is off,” the issue is often not the spreadsheet, but one of these:
🧐 the definition changed
🧐 the source systems disagree
🧐 the automation is doing too much
🧐 no one owns the logic anymore
That’s why a metrics audit is often the fastest way to create clarity. It’s not glamorous, but it shows where the system stops being reliable.
If you’re running Salesforce plus adjacent tools and the numbers don’t line up, I usually start with reviewing:
👉 metric definitions
👉 field lineage
👉 automation review
👉 exception handling
👉 reporting ownership
Most organizations don't need more dashboards. If we start by agreeing on key definitions, this leads to fewer contradictions, (a lot) less opinions and more evidence-based decision making.
That’s the kind of cleanup that makes RevOps easier to maintain after we leave it.
